The history of the computer has often been associated with concepts of dissolving and disappearance, even despite many attempts to assess its technical and cultural history. With the development of personal computing in the 1970s and 1980s, it became increasingly problematic to speak of the computer in the same way that one speaks of film or television as distinct media. The conference provides a forum to discuss the complex transformations of the computer towards ubiquitous computing or ambient media, that connect the promise of immediacy with new concepts of spatiality and question the relationship between digital technology, users, and media environments. It offers the chance for a dialogue between diverging schools and styles of thought within the field of current media theory.
